About Rechie Valdez
Rechie Valdez’s story is shaped by resilience, care, and a deep commitment to community.
Born in Zambia, she immigrated to Canada with her family in 1989, carrying values of hard work, faith, and perseverance that continue to guide her. Long before entering public office, she built a life rooted in service—as a professional, entrepreneur, mother, and mentor.
For 15 years, Rechie worked in corporate banking, gaining expertise in change management and strategic initiatives. Driven to create something of her own, she launched a small business and expanded it through online platforms.
She later hosted a television show highlighting entrepreneurs, creators, and artists - amplifying voices often unheard and celebrating the courage to pursue new ideas.
Her entrepreneurial journey also reflects her cultural pride. As a proud Filipina-Canadian, she co-founded a Filipino fusion pastry line sold in major Asian grocery stores in Mississauga and actively contributed to the Filipino professional community, advocating for representation and opportunity.
In 2021, Rechie was elected as the Member of Parliament for Mississauga—Streetsville, becoming the first Filipino-Canadian woman in the House of Commons and later the first to serve in Cabinet. For her, this milestone is about more than representation - it’s about responsibility. She is committed to ensuring her community’s diverse voices are heard and reflected in decisions that shape their lives.
Her parliamentary work reflects both experience and values.
She has served on the Standing Committee on Veterans Affairs, contributed to the Canadian NATO Parliamentary Association, and chaired the Canada-Philippines Parliamentary Friendship Group. In 2022, she sponsored the National Women’s Entrepreneurship Act, advocating for greater opportunity and support for women in business.
In May 2025, she was appointed Minister of Women and Gender Equality and Secretary of State for Small Business and Tourism. In this role, she champions gender equality, economic inclusion, and safety—advancing opportunities for women, 2SLGBTQI+ communities, and diverse groups nationwide. She supports national women’s organizations and represents Canada at international forums, including the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women, bringing lived experience and collaboration to every table.
Beyond her titles, Rechie’s perspective is personal. As a mother of two, she understands the challenges of balancing work and family and the importance of accessible childcare, affordable housing, and workplaces that allow people to thrive.
Her commitment to empowerment runs through everything she does. As a mentor, speaker, and community advocate, she uplifts women, girls, youth, and marginalized groups—encouraging them to see possibility in their own paths.
Rechie believes in leadership that listens, fosters dialogue, and builds trust through action. From entrepreneur to national leader, she has been guided by a simple belief: leadership is about service, unity is strength, and when people are given the opportunity to succeed, entire communities rise with them.
Riding Information
Mississauga–Streetsville is a federal riding in the City of Mississauga, located along the Credit River and centred around the historic Village of Streetsville. The riding includes neighbourhoods such as Streetsville, Meadowvale, and parts of Central Erin Mills, and is part of the Region of Peel Region.
With roots as “The Village in the City,” Mississauga–Streetsville blends small-town charm with a growing, diverse suburban community. From historic main streets and local festivals to thriving small businesses and family-friendly neighbourhoods, the riding offers a strong sense of community alongside opportunity and growth.
We know that residents of Mississauga–Streetsville value safe neighbourhoods, accessible housing, and reliable public services; they expect practical leadership that strengthens both the community and the country. That’s why we are focused on working with national stakeholders, provincial partners, and municipal leaders to ensure we are delivering for Mississauga–Streetsville.
Parliamentary Roles
As a Member of Parliament, my role is to represent the people of Mississauga–Streetsville in the House of Commons—voicing local concerns, debating and voting on legislation, and serving on committees and in caucus. My team and I also support constituents in accessing federal programs and services, while being your voice in government. I also attend community events and engagement to support constituents, local organizations and small businesses.
As Minister for Women and Gender Equality and Secretary of State for Tourism and Small Business, my role is to support the Government of Canada’s priorities by developing and implementing policies, programs, and initiatives that advance gender equality and inclusive economic growth. This includes working to address systemic barriers, promote the full participation of women in all aspects of Canadian life, and support a more equitable and inclusive society.
In my responsibilities related to tourism and small business, I work to foster a competitive business environment by supporting entrepreneurs, promoting sustainable growth in the tourism sector, and improving conditions for businesses to start, scale, and succeed. This includes collaborating with partners, stakeholders, and other orders of government to enhance economic development and create jobs across the country.
I also work with federal departments and agencies to ensure the effective delivery of programs and services, and to uphold accountability to Parliament. Through these responsibilities, I contribute to shaping policies and initiatives that support economic resilience, strengthen communities, and deliver results for Canadians, including those in Mississauga–Streetsville.
