It was an honour to join colleagues, community leaders, and members of the Filipino-Canadian community for the Philippine Flag Raising Ceremony on Parliament Hill, celebrating Philippine Independence Day and the enduring friendship between Canada and the Philippines. 
 
As a proud Filipino Canadian, this occasion holds special meaning for me. It is an opportunity to celebrate the rich history, culture, and traditions that generations of Filipino Canadians have brought to communities across our country. Today, more than one million people of Filipino heritage call Canada home, making Filipino Canadians one of the largest and fastest-growing diaspora communities in a country of over 40 million people. From healthcare and education to entrepreneurship, public service, skilled trades, and countless other fields, Filipino Canadians continue to make invaluable contributions that strengthen Canada’s social, cultural, and economic fabric. 

The ceremony was also a chance to reflect on the importance of representation and the opportunities that come from living in a diverse and inclusive society. As the first Filipina Canadian elected to Canada’s Parliament and to serve in Cabinet, I am reminded of the many individuals and families whose hard work, sacrifices, and determination have helped pave the way for future generations. 

I was especially pleased to recognise the continued success of the Filipino-Canadian Internship Program, which provides young Filipino Canadians with invaluable opportunities to gain experience in public service, develop leadership skills, and contribute to their communities. Programs like these help empower the next generations of leaders and ensure that Filipino voices continue to be represented in every sector of Canadian society. 

Philippine Independence Day is not only a celebration of heritage, but also of the strong people-to-people ties and lasting friendship between Canada and the Philippines. It is a reminder of the shared values of community, resilience, and opportunity to continue to bring our two countries closer together.  

Thank you to the Canada-Philippines Interparliamentary Friendship Group and everyone who joined us on Parliament Hill to celebrate this important occasion. I am especially grateful to the many Filipino Canadians who travelled from communities across the country to be part of this celebration. Your presence reflects the strength, unity, and vibrancy of the Filipino Canadian community that enriches our country every day.
