It was an honour to deliver the keynote address at the inaugural Black Swan Conference in the Waterloo Region and connect with entrepreneurs, business leaders, and changemakers who are helping shape a stronger and more inclusive Canadian economy. 

Throughout the discussion, we reflected on the importance of creating spaces where underrepresented entrepreneurs feel supported, empowered, and connected. The theme of the conference this year, “The Right Room Can Change Your Business,” speaks to the value of mentorship, networking, and community in helping small businesses grow and succeed. 

As someone who was once a small business owner before entering public service, I shared my own journey from entrepreneurship to serving as Canada’s Minister of Women and Gender Equality and Secretary of State for Small Business and Tourism. I know first-hand the challenges that many entrepreneurs face, but also the resilience, creativity, and determination that drive small businesses forward every day. 

I was also pleased to highlight the many federal programs and supports available to Canadian small businesses and encouraged entrepreneurs to continue building connections, seeking opportunities, and investing in their growth. Supporting minority-led businesses and underrepresented communities remains essential to building an economy that is both inclusive and sustainable for everyone.
